Automated and Robotics Technology from Merkland Tank
Merkland Tank are increasingly harnessing the power and efficiency of automated technologies for a wide range of tank cleaning, waste disposal and bespoke industrial cleaning projects.
We have invested in a number of state-of-the-art automated and semi-automated systems that can effectively tackle a variety of projects including closed waterblasting and surface preparation, heat exchanger tube bundle cleaning and debris/waste removal.
Not only does the use of automated tank cleaning technology minimise the need for confined-space entry and work at height in high-risk environments, our customers are able to benefit from the efficiency gains and reduced downtime on site – keeping your operations running smoothly.
What are the benefits of Automated and Robotics Technology for Industrial Cleaning?
- Enhanced Safety: Automated technologies, including the Brokk 70 robot, reduces the need for confined-space entry, protecting operatives in high-risk or hard-to-reach environments.
- Increased Efficiency: Remote-controlled systems such as Sentinel and Compass (for heating exchanger tube bundle cleaning), deliver faster cleaning, significantly reducing project time and disruption to site operations, helping your business stay more productive.
- Improved Cleaning Precision: Automation enables accurate, thorough cleaning of internal and external surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas, providing consistent cleaning performance across every project.
- Environmentally Sensitive Solutions: Closed waterblasting systems such as the MagTrack Robotic Crawler collect water and debris to reduce waste and minimise environmental risk.
- Customised for Complex Jobs: Ideal for bespoke industrial cleaning projects, including exchanger tube bundles and GRP-lined fuel tanks.
- Real-Time Performance Monitoring: Many of the automated systems provide real-time live job performance data to ensure optimal performance across the entire project.

Brokk 70 Robot: Immense Power in Miniature Size
When safety, efficiency, and precision matter, the Brokk 70 is a game-changer.
The latest automation addition to the Merkland Tank fleet, the Brokk 70 is maximum power in compact form – a remote-controlled, no-dig, electric vacuum excavator that’s ideal for safe and efficient waste and debris removal jobs.
Designed for a range of high-performance tasks in tight, hazardous or hard-to-access environments, our Brokk 70 is the first of its spec in mainland UK, fitted with the Brokk vacuum excavation system. It has a 6” digging can, 12” digging bucket and variable hitch for multiple attachments. It’s also the perfect partner for working alongside our CycloVac Pro Skytipper.
Equipped with SmartPower™ and a smooth hydraulic system, the Brokk enables controlled, efficient work, eliminating the need for handheld tools and manual handling, in turn reducing risk to operatives.
Small enough to pass through narrow doorways, the Brokk 70 is ideal for sectors where space and safety are critical, such as utilities and industrial tank cleaning.
- Fitted with the Brokk Vacuum Excavation System
- Weighs less than 560kg
- 9.8kW Brokk SmartPower™ electrical system
- Powered with only 16A electricity fuse
- Ability to operate up to 100m from our vacuum tankers
MagTrack Robotic Crawler: Efficient, Safe and Precise
If you need fast, effective tank cleaning without compromising safety, the MagTrack robotic crawler offers a smart, innovative solution.
Designed for waterblasting and surface preparation, the magnetic, 4-wheel drive, universal MagTrack Carrier supports various MagTrack tools and accessories for multi-purpose applications.
With the options of the Blastcan (Vacuum Dome) for closed high pressure water jetting, or the Swing Arm for ‘open’ robotic water jetting, the MagTrack delivers deep, controlled tank cleaning and surface preparation.
Fully remote-operated, it removes the need for confined space entry or work at height and reduces risk to personnel.
- MagTack Carrier Unit weighs 80kg
- Power: 110V
- Pressure up to 40,000 psi
- 50m long umbilical cable
- Compact size 720 x 510 x 360 mm (fits through 24” manhole)
Sentinel: The Future of Heat Exchanger Tube Cleaning
For reduced downtime with maximised safety and performance, the fully-automated Sentinel brings next-generation intelligence to your heat exchanger tube cleaning.
Operated by a ‘game-inspired’ hand controller that provides real-time job performance data throughout the entire project, the Sentinel maps and diagrams the tubesheet during setup, then cleans the interior tubes automatically: no operator input needed.
It has some great features to maximise efficiency; job capture to save job-specific data to make repeat maintenance even faster, automatic learning to remove the requirement for manual measurements, and predictive job data to estimate time until completion.
Sentinel takes the complexity out of exchanger cleaning, allowing our team to effortlessly remove unwanted buildup and significantly improve the efficiency of the heat exchanger.
Compass: Safe and Efficient Tube Bundle Cleaning
Merkland’s semi-automatic Compass system is a remote-operated positioning system for horizontal, vertical and confined space exchanger cleaning.
Radial motion from a single connection point allows the operator to access all tubes in most bundles without remounting the position.
The ‘Compass’ system vastly improves on previously used manual methods in terms of safety and efficiency. Operatives are stationed away from the area of work, minimising their exposure to debris and high-pressure water, while the semi-automatic system delivers a more consistent, thorough and efficient clean.
