Our History
Founded in 1880 the Merkland philosophy has always associated tradition and innovation.
The 1960s, however, marked significant expansion for us as we recognised the burgeoning industrial opportunities within the UK. The company broadened its horizons and capabilities by diversifying into tank cleaning.
During 2005, Merkland Tank & Boiler Co. (Est. 1967) and James Muir & Sons (Est. 1880) were re-located due to the new developments at Partick riverside.
Consequently, a new company – Merkland Tank – was formed to continue trading in the tradition and philosophy of the original two companies.
In 2017, Glasgow-based investors Nevis Capital completed the acquisition of Merkland Tank from Robbie Horne, the third-generation owner who had been leading the business for more than 35 years.
Since then, the business has continued to grow and develop, led by Managing Director Kirsty McIntyre and with the ongoing support from Nevis.
Combining commitment and expertise has enabled Merkland Tank to continually offer services based on confidence and trust, values we still hold to this day.
“As a business we have a tremendous heritage from the original ship servicing works to steel work contracts, and have become a leader in our field due to the quality and dedication of our outstanding team.
The Nevis team have brought an ambition to take the business through its next stage of development and have helped us to grow the business and to diversify into new markets.”
