Spotlight On… Tank Decommissioning Support Services
As well as carrying out end-to-end tank decommissioning projects, Merkland Tank provide tank cleaning and waste removal services that prepare tanks for safe and compliant 3rd-party demolition.
Recently, our team were tasked with removing around 100m3 of fish-oil residue from a 1,200m3 storage tank, on behalf of our client who was overseeing the decommissioning project in North East Scotland.
Prior to our team’s arrival, our client carried out a preliminary internal inspection that identified approximately 600mm depth of viscous residue that need to be removed; a pungent and stubborn mix of accumulated solids, salmon oil sludge, liquid and washings.
Our confined space operatives, equipped with specialist breathing apparatus, entered the tank via the side manhole and set to work to manually break down and shift the sludge using long spades. Two of our powerful vacuum tankers then took the strain to efficiently suction the sludge directly from the tank, with the oily waste transported off-site to a licensed disposal facility, in line with current waste regulations.
After a final internal wash down, the redundant tank was confirmed free from residual waste and posing no environmental risk, deeming it in a suitable and safe condition for the demolition works to proceed.
