ABOUT THE PROJECT
Merkland Tank were tasked with removing and replacing an aging 6,000 litre plastic diesel tank at our transport and logistics client’s busy distribution hub, as well as installing a new standalone fuel management system.
THE SOLUTION
We began the process by draining down, cleaning and gas-freeing the existing fuel storage tank. Our experienced team of operatives removed any traces of residual oil by pressure-washing the internal walls of the tank.
We engaged the services of a specialist hiab truck with lorry-mounted crane to lift the old tank onto the vehicle for safe transportation back to Merkland Tank’s depot. Here, our team cut the tank into smaller, manageable sections before taking to a local recycling facility for safe onward disposal, in line with current regulations.

With the old tank removed, our team then installed a new 5,000 litre fully bunded plastic storage tank, supplied as per our clients’ specifications. Measuring 2.4 metres in height and 2.7m in length, the new tank is moulded from durable medium density polyethylene material, making it a robust fuel station with a range of high spec features as standard.
We also installed a Merridale MX-M/1 fuel management system on pedestal mount (pictured below), that comes complete with GPRS communications link for real-time fuel management reporting.

CHALLENGES
One project planning consideration was the fact the site is COMAH-regulated (Control of Major Accident Hazards). Merkland Tank are, however, well experienced in working across high-risk sites and as always, we enforced strict safety protocols during the project.
THE OUTCOME
Merkland Tank managed all aspects of the project end-to-end to deliver a seamless fuel storage solution for our client – on time and within budget.
Over 3 days, we safely and efficiently cleaned and removed the old tank and completed installation of the new tank and fuel management system. The new set up provides our client with a safe, durable and upgraded tank which will ensure they remain compliant with UK regulations. They will also undoubtedly benefit from the enhanced data collection, analysis and real-time reporting of the fuel management system, reducing the need for manual tracking and minimising fuel misuse and waste.
WHAT OUR CLIENT HAD TO SAY
Upon completion, we were delighted to receive a glowing commendation from our client:
“Merkland Tank provided an excellent level of service from start to finish. They took full responsibility for all risk assessments and method statements, ensuring compliance and minimising the involvement required from site management.
Having a single point of contact throughout greatly improved communication and reduced our own administrative burden. All works were managed efficiently and in line with safety and environmental requirements.
Professional, helpful, well-organised…Merkland Tank completed the job safely, on time, and to a high standard. We would confidently recommend them for similar projects.”
