Managing Director

Joined Merkland: 1995

“We are proud to have a team whose industry experience is renowned within our sector.

But more than that, they consistently go ‘above and beyond’ to get the job done. This non-stop customer focus is one of the main reasons our clients trust Merkland Tank to deliver on time, safely, and with exceptional results every time.”

I have worked at Merkland Tank for over 30 years, having joined as an Office Junior straight after leaving college.

From the very beginning, I made it my ambition to understand every aspect of the business. That meant gaining hands-on experience across the company, from cleaning tanks and bilges to learning what matters most to our clients.

That breadth of experience has helped me develop into my current role as Managing Director, where I support the team, work closely with colleagues and clients, and help ensure we consistently deliver the best possible results.

What makes Merkland special is its people. We have a strong, supportive team and a shared commitment to quality, which is something we’re all proud of. Being part of a business with those values for more than 30 years has been incredibly rewarding and enjoyable.

“Having been in the industry for more than 30 years, it’s clear Merkland Tank are recognised for our reputation and our people.

The training we give our staff is second to none. We take health and safety seriously, so we make sure they’re well equipped for their work, and importantly stay safe at all times.”

I started in Merkland as Senior Operator, then within about 3 years I moved into the office as Operations Manager. As the company grew, we brought in additional resource for a Transport Manager, Health and Safety Manager, and Operations Manager, which freed up much of my time to move to my current role as Technical Director.

Merkland have given me the opportunity to grow as an individual and progress within the company. I’ve worked on interesting tank installation projects, worked closely with multiple sub-contractors and to tight timescales. Sometimes there’s lots of challenges to overcome, but when we work together we get the job done and it’s very rewarding.

The values and the reputation Merkland have are well-renowned. The way we look after everyone and give staff the training they need truly makes it a great place to work.

“I’ve never worked in a company before that provides as much training, development and potential for employee betterment.”

As Operations Manager, each day can be different depending on which projects are commencing.

Each day will certainly involve starting work early, taking numerous phone calls to help the teams on site and receive updates. Each day I will also talk to several Operatives to brief them on works and take time out to check on wellbeing.

My greatest achievement here is being recognised, accepted and appreciated by staff at all levels.

In the time I’ve been here, the company has evolved fairly rapidly. I have been regularly offered numerous opportunities to further develop my skills as Merkland puts great weight into staff development.

“I love seeing the company grow, utilising new innovative technologies and knowing we’ve all contributed to that growth!”

Having already worked in the industrial services sector, I was encouraged to join Merkland by the trajectory and ambition of the company. I’ve already progressed in the sales team to my current role with additional responsibility.

My day is non-stop and I have to be available for customer needs and demands at short notice.

But, Merkland are a very progressive employer and encourage all employees to take part in onward development and training, so it’s been a great move for me to join the business.

“The job can be challenging, busy and (very) dirty – but it’s rewarding too, especially when you get a hard job done well and completed on time!”

I’ve always worked in this sector, where Merkland have a good reputation.

There have been many opportunities to develop and progress here; lots of health and safety training, IOSH, Class 2 Driver, hot works and full tank decommissioning skills.

I enjoy working on challenging jobs – there was one tough bitumen tank where we removed over 200 tonnes! I enjoy being hands-on though, and I’m proud to work hard to provide for my family.

Staff morale is good too, and it helps when you have a good, supportive team to work with!

Long-standing employee Alan has shown great progression – and he thanks Merkland Tank for supporting his development all the way…

I had been in the industry for 30 years when I moved to Merkland Tank – I’d heard good things!

I started off as an Operator, progressed onto Tanker Driver, made up to Chargehand, and then the new role of supervisor was created to help advance my career further within the company.

Now, I work in a hybrid role as Transport and Plant Coordinator, though you’ll still find me out on site too driving and uplifting waste.

I’m proud of my progression within the business and I’m working towards my Transport Manager CPC, which I hope will open up even more opportunities for me in Merkland Tank.

Any training I’ve asked for has been given – they treat the staff well and look after us.

“Every day is different and I’m constantly learning. I’ve been given the opportunity to develop my skills, and I’ve never looked back!”

“Interesting projects? I don’t think I could name one as I find them all interesting. Tank Installations and Heavy Fuel Oil tanks though are two areas I find the most interesting as they require the most coordination of equipment and you always learn something new.

I’ve been given the chance to develop my skills by experiencing the different roles in the business. I like problem solving which I have been able to use on a variety of challenges. I’ve received a lot of training to allow me to put my skills to their best use.

I achieved my NEBOSH which was challenging, but it was worthwhile to develop my knowledge of health and safety which is so important to consider when pricing up quotes.

Why is Merkland a great place to work? The team is always happy to help each other and have so much knowledge between the different departments.

“When I joined, it was an industry I knew nothing about. Being new to it, it was exciting – and I’ve definitely learnt a lot.”

I started as a graduate, shadowed Jon (Proctor) for the first 6 months or so and then I went out more on my own and, over time, became more independent.

My role is project engineer, and I deal with all the engineering works on a day-to-day basis. So, that could include dealing with our on-site engineer, staying in contact with clients, programming in works, pre-planning upcoming jobs and researching parts and discussing with manufacturers. Lots of variation, which I love.

Everybody has been so welcoming and knowledgeable, and are happy to share that long-standing knowledge and experience for the benefit of the team and business.

“Every qualification I have, I achieved while at Merkland!”

After working in a factory for 18 years, it was time for a change. With a family member already working at Merkland Tank and praising the business, I initially joined as Operative.

Despite no previous experience in this sector, I was made Chargehand – something I’m really proud of and it felt good to be recognised by management to take on that role.

My job involves me looking more into the planning of jobs and helping continuously improve our processes. Some of the new guys that come in don’t have a lot of experience, so I take the time to help the new starts settle in and are confident in what they’re doing each day.

Every qualification I’ve got, I achieved while at Merkland. They’ve helped me to get all the training I need to do my job to the best of my ability.

I love the fact I get to travel around the UK and go to places I’ve never been. I would never have gone to some of the places up North without this job. Recently, I was up in the Scottish Hebrides – it was lovely!
