Jura Distillery – Tank & Pipework Clean
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Merkland Tank were delighted to carry out a full tank clean in July 2021 at Jura Distillery. Our team travelled to one of Scotland’s most spectacular but remote islands to clean the distillery’s 125,000 litre capacity fuel tank, measuring 5 metres in diameter x 7 metres in height, and all associated pipework.
Following site inductions, set-up and sampling, our vacuum tanker removed approx. 10,000 litres of MFO, which was transferred to an insulated tanker for safe and compliant onward disposal.
Our experienced confined space operatives then removed the remaining tank residues by high lift tanker, cleaned the internal base, coils and walls and finished with a final hot detergent wash. After inspection, all tank and bund manway gaskets were replaced to complete the job.
ABOUT JURA DISTILLERY
Jura distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery on the island of Jura in the Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. The distillery is owned by Glasgow founded and based Whyte and Mackay, which in turn is owned by Philippines-based Emperador Inc. With only one road, one pub, one distillery and some 200 people, Jura is as beautiful as it is remote.
Originally established in 1810, the distillery was born once again in 1963 to bring life back to the island and the community. And with great success. Today, almost every family on the island has a member who works in the distillery, with the distillery or in whisky-related tourism.
